Go Green! Recycling Club
We are Girl Scouts on a mission. Earning our Bronze Award went from a simple project that we barely touched on at meetings to a serious commitment. We are 4th and 5th graders who learned from Mrs. Cohen (5th grade teacher) why recycling is important and how to do it.
Scroll down to see the chart on how to recycle and what to recycle. Mrs. Cohen's science lessons really paid off. We raised money and created popularity around the school by raffling off an iPod Shuffle. We sold tickets during lunch and bought bins wtih the money for every classroom, the offices, and the gym.
We also had a contest for the club name. Jenny Sullivan, 2nd grader submitted the winning club title "GO GREEN! RECYCLING CLUB
Although some many not fully appreciate the importance of the three Rs, it can save the world. On the website of www.rirecyclingclub.com they grade the schools on how well they recycle. St. Pius V had an F. We have already changed that to an IP (in progress) and hope to raise our grade to an A!

RECYCLING KICKOFF - JUNE 2008
The Max Man visited the school during the lunch periods to teach about recycling to all the students. Daisy Diaz from the Providence Public Works department spoke about the importance of recycling and how proud she was that St. Pius was starting a recycling program. Each student received a free ice cream treat during lunch to celebrate the kickoff of the school's recycling program. The Max Man also gave out pencils made from recycled materials, comic books, coloring books and literature about recycling to all the students.

WHAT ARE THE THREE Rs?
|
 |
REUSE - Use things over and over again. Such as Stop & Shop bags, Water Bottles, Sandwich bags and both sides of scrap paper. These steps also help to Reduce.
REDUCE - By reusing we reduce the amount of trash that goes in the landfill. Use Plastic containers instead of Sandwich bags, use cloth napkins instead of paper napkins. Use water bottles instead of bottled water.
RECYCLE - Instead of throwing away items, you can recycle them into new stuff. For example: Milk jugs get turned into park benches, Used paper gets turned into new paper, and old metal can be turned into new cans and cars. |

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT CAN BE RECYCLED?
|
 |
Rhode Island only collects bottles and containers with
"1" or "2" symbols on the bottom.
If you come across 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 you have to throw it in the trash. |
